Carrier or Wrap – how to choose?

We now know that a newborn thrives best after birth when in close physical contact with their mother — and later with their father or another close person. That’s why many parents no longer ask “to carry or not to carry?” but rather “what to carry in?”

If you’re trying to navigate the wide range of babywearing options available today, we’ve prepared a helpful overview for you. And if you already know your way around, you can go straight to exploring our current selection of newborn wraps and ergonomic carriers.

Wrap

A woven wrap has long been the most recommended tool for carrying newborns. For many, it might seem intimidating at first, but those who have tried it quickly realize it’s not complicated at all. The unbeatable advantage of a wrap is that it perfectly adapts both to the baby and the parent’s body. At every stage of development, it provides the right support from knee to knee and along the entire back, ensuring a healthy ergonomic position. A wrap is strong and supportive, yet soft and flexible enough to hold the baby securely without restricting movement.

Length

We offer three wrap sizes – 5, 6, and 7. The right one for you depends mainly on your clothing size and height. Our Size Chart will help you decide. As for tying methods, we recommend starting with the basic Front Wrap Cross Carry. The length of the wrap suitable for this carry will also allow you to make all other common variations.

Composition

Wraps can be made from 100% cotton or contain various blends that influence their properties. Our current collection includes wraps that are soft, gentle, and made from high-quality combed cotton. Thanks to special weaving techniques, they are strong enough to provide proper support for your baby.

Weight (GSM)

The weight of the fabric (measured in GSM) helps determine how a wrap behaves in use, especially in terms of carrying comfort. All wraps have a very high weight capacity — even up to 700 kg. Generally, the higher the GSM, the thicker and heavier the wrap. The weaving style and fiber blend also play a role. In our experience, a medium-weight all-cotton wrap is the most versatile: easy to tie for small babies, yet comfortable for carrying a heavier toddler. GSM is, however, just a guideline — many other factors, such as weave density or pattern, also affect the feel and support of the wrap.

Carrier or Wrap – how to choose?

Carrier

For many expectant parents, a carrier seems like an easier and more convenient choice — and it truly is a very practical babywearing aid. When you choose the right one, it’s also extremely comfortable, which is why many parents prefer carriers for older babies.

If you’re choosing a carrier for a newborn, it’s essential that it’s truly designed for such a small baby. That means the carrier must adjust to the baby, not the other way around. It shouldn’t squeeze, overstretch the baby’s legs, press under the knees, flatten the back, or fail to mold to the baby’s body due to stiff padding. Take your time to research, read detailed information, and ask questions to make sure you’re selecting the most suitable model.

A newborn can weigh 2.5 kg or 4 kg and have different degrees of flexibility, spinal curvature, or muscle tone. All these differences should be respected — we shouldn’t force a baby to adapt to the carrier, but rather choose one that adjusts to their small body and natural development, offering gentle yet secure support.

It’s also important to understand that no single carrier can perfectly fit both a one-week-old newborn and a three-year-old toddler. A child’s needs change over time, and the structure of a carrier simply can’t meet all those requirements across such a wide age range. After all, we don’t buy shoes for a new walker expecting them to fit when they’re three. 🙂 From our experience, the most active babywearing period is within the first 1–2 years. Of course, bigger children can be carried too — but that’s not something you can predict at birth.

We kept all of this in mind when designing our Sestrice Carrier ONE. It doesn’t have a newborn insert, the fabric between the legs can be narrowed down to 12 cm, and the soft BellySupport waist belt provides comfort for the postpartum belly. The size of the carrier is designed to last until about 1.5–2 years, depending on your child’s size.

Carrier Sizes

When deciding which carrier to choose, the most important factor is your baby’s age at the time of purchase.

If you want to carry your baby from birth, choose Sestrice Carrier ONE, which provides full comfort and support even for the smallest babies.

If you’ve been using a wrap or are starting to carry an older baby, we recommend the Sestrice Carrier (suitable from 3 months). Its firmer waistband distributes the weight of a growing child more effectively, which you’ll appreciate over time.

For babies older than 10 months (over 70 cm in height), choose Sestrice Carrier Plus, the larger version of the Sestrice Carrier — perfect for carrying until your little one (or you!) decides it’s time to stop. 🙂
